New petition to have more women in UK parliament
The 50:50 campaign are fighting to get more women in the UK Parliament.
The organisation has created a petition to start a plan for better gender balance in MPs.
The petition asks the UK government for more debate around the subject of women representation and action.
It has 6,073 supporters but aims to reach 100,000.
The organisation released the statistic that 77% of MPs are men, when there are 32 million women in the UK.
50:50 have released a statement saying “We need to make sure that women’s opinions and voices are being represented to the best ability. At the moment, austerity cuts are negatively affecting women disproportionately; we need women in Parliament to make sure that women are thought of when it comes to making policy. It’s our world too.”
50:50 will be holding a festival booth from the 1-8 March 2015 at the Southbank Centre.
They will also be part of the “Walk in Her Shoes” walk on the 8 March 2015, where women will walk with Dr Helen Pankhurst (great great granddaughter of Suffragette Leader Emmeline Pankhurst) and Laura Bates (founder of Everyday Sexism) on International Women's Day.
